Whose values do you teach?

Whose values do you teach?

Whose values do you teach?

Tricky question. How do you decide? In some cultures, you don't get a choice. In others, you do. In either case, whoever decided, based on which factors did they prioritize the values taught? Religion? Tradition? Personal alignment? Democratic input?

How do you choose which values to teach to your children? Which parent prioritizes which values higher when there are life lessons happening? In the moment, what happens, happens. C'est la vie? Maybe. But there are other metrics and options too. Because life is an experiential process, and due in large part to the importance of developing a value system, exposure to their existence seems to matter more than to what they are. Our respective societies and spheres of influence will hone their priority.

In addition to their priority though, there also has to be interpretation of not only the practical value of values; but also, the intrinsic value of values. To what degree of fulfillment do you attribute your values? If you don't see the value of adventure because you are more cautious, frugal, or fragile, that's fine. You likely won't be encountering many grandiose, materialistic adventures in your life or within that phase. But if you still intrinsically value adventure, maybe you find a good book, attempt public speaking when you're terrified of it, or attend a concert when you don't prefer crowds, for example. Adventure is relative, but the sense of it instills growth, courage, and resilience. That goes for everyone regardless of the application.

Exposure to values is what matters. Respect for other people's values; or other societies morals is also a good way to generally emphasize respect as a value. It's like adding cheese to vegetables you don't like or refused to eat as a kid. Parents find ways to encourage physical nutrition. Holistically, spiritual and mental nutrition is no different. A conscious effort buys the junk food and the healthier stuff. A conscious effort focuses on the superficial; and a conscious effort emphasizes the spiritually and mentally healthier stuff too.

Whose you choose is a conversation that we need to deliberately discuss as couples, and as societies, sometimes even as a party of one. But that you recognize, not even that you choose, is what becomes more important as life grows on. Listen in on our website https://buff.ly/3XpJNVm to hear more.
