What are the key challenges in teaching values?
Hard work, communication skills, social and topical appeal, marketing, triggers, and practical value.
The hard work comes more in the form of introspection and relationships. As we grow through life we have to more closely identify what we stand for and then stand behind those principles and values. They create our character; and like every good story, a great backdrop for a plot in life is only as good as the character in it.
Communication skills require a bit of creativity, flexibility, and resourcefulness. Think through a comedy show, a music performance, a theatrical production, or just a public conversation with any sized audience. What makes them entertaining? The emotional resonance? The tone, pitch, and rhythm of their voice? The consonance and dissonance of the music? Maybe. But without the ability to effectively convey and communicate those things in a manner that the respective audience understands, they would be nothing.
Social media promotions, marketing, algorithms, etc were designed to automate that predictive relationship capability. It's not new or complicated as a concept, but it is complex. We do it almost subconsciously the older that we get; but because it is a skill set we can develop/hone it. Some people more effectively than others. But we do it hastily on the fly, in real time, live action. Computers can't do that in the same manner but they can create intrigue and appeal where there otherwise may be none. Then the cycle continues.
That cycle regarding the social and topical appeal of values though is difficult to create without an accompanying product or service. How does respect make you money? How does courage pay your electric bill? It's difficult to see at first. But how does adventure pay the rent at any hostel in a tourist destination? Or how does abundance and contentment create a nonprofit company, a scholarship fund, an endowment, or grant?
Our values don't always appear as they are. Our values are reclusive but they can't help themselves to be seen. Just because they may be outwardly shy doesn't mean they can't be recognized. Teaching values becomes more complicated when there isn't a resonance, practical application, face value, or conceptual understand with an audience.
More importantly though, to a lot of people values are boring to talk or learn about.
I disagree though. Values make our character who it becomes; values are how we showcase our value to like-minded people. Values enable us to build our families from our friends; our co-workers from our clients; our children from our fosters; and our generational wealth from our wisdom.
