How much money does it take to start a media production company?
This was an unfathomable question for me to answer at the start too. Especially when you think of other media production companies. Who do you think of? Warner Brothers? Sony? LucasFilms? True, true, and true. But, they aren't in the same league now as they were 40-50 years ago. Did you know that Disney is a production company too? What is their budget to produce movies and media now? Millions per...and that's just for the production. That initial figure doesn't include the employees, materials, venues, promotion, marketing, etc.
So then how do you even factor in a budget to get started? It has to start with one person and some skills. The investment paid for those skills may be an initial barrier to entry for some people. That doesn't mean that it has to be that way. Here's an example. I have a podcast that, for now, is being built as the central pillar for a unified message of the importance of values and character development. That message will carry through to my production company too. Explicitly. But so then media company isn't qualified as the "Disney now," but the "Disney then" model. Walt Disney was one animator who happened to be able to draw and have a vision. Then he built a team, marketed to financiers, and started from scratch.
Money is important, but it isn't the goal. It's the tool to get to the goal. Find what your strengths and weaknesses are; find how to complement your strengths and how to supplement your weaknesses. Learn how to build a mutually supported team that will increase resonance for your vision. The amount of money is dependent on the production quality. The production quality is dependent on the individuals and the atmospherics within the production team (no matter the size).
It's always less a question about money, and more a consideration towards people.
